Greetings

Greetings from General Chairs

As a general chair of the IEEE Wireless Power Technology Conference & Expo (WPTCE) 2024, I welcome all speakers, exhibitors, and attendees in Kyoto. The IEEE WPTCE2024 is biggest international conference of all wireless power transfer technologies and applications in the world. In 2011, it was started from Kyoto, Japan as IEEE MTT-S International Microwave Workshop Series on Innovative Wireless Power Transmission: Technologies, Systems, and Applications (IMWS-IWPT). I was a general chair of the IMWS-IWPT2011. It was a small workshop, however, the WPTCE has grown over the years with the development of the scientific society and the development of the new WPT market simultaniously. Recently, International Telecommunication Union – Radiocommunication Sector (ITU-R) published WPT recommendation. A new radio regulation for the WPT was established in Japan. A lot of WPT start-up companies are born and grow in the world. I am very happy that the academic activities started in 2011 have expanded into such a large new innovative field and I’m also glad to be able to welcome so many WPT researchers to Kyoto, Japan again. “The best way to predict the future is to invent it.” It’s a famous word by Alan Kay. We don’t predict the future of the WPT and we are not taking advantage of someone’s else prediction. We, all attendees of this conference, are inventing the future of the WPT by ourselves. I hope all attendees enjoy the WPTCE2024 and hope they will invent the future of the WPT after the WPTCE2024.

On behalf of the Organizing Committee, I am pleased to welcome you all to the 2024 IEEE Wireless Power Technology Conference and Expo (WPTCE2024). Sponsored by the IEEE Microwave Theory and Technology Society (MTT-S) and the IEEE Power Electronics Society (PELS), this important event will be held May 8-11, 2024, in Kyoto, Japan. WPTCE2024 aims to provide a comprehensive multidisciplinary forum for researchers from industry and academia to explore cutting-edge topics in wireless power technologies, present the latest research results, and discuss future developments in this dynamic field.
Wireless power is a promising area of research with broad applications ranging from small electronic devices to mobility solutions such as electric vehicles and drones. One particularly exciting application is in-motion wireless charging for electric vehicles. This innovative technology enables EVs with smaller batteries to achieve adequate range and is expected to play a significant role in achieving carbon neutrality in transportation. This technology has undergone numerous pilot tests around the world, and I have been fortunate to dedicate more than a decade to its research. Last year, we began public road trials in Kashiwa, near Tokyo, where my laboratory at the University of Tokyo is located. If the opportunity arises, I would be delighted if you could visit and witness these trials firsthand.
As your hosts for WPTCE2024, we are committed to providing you with a memorable experience filled with engaging technical sessions and enjoyable social activities. We eagerly anticipate the opportunity to welcome you to Kyoto and to foster engaging discussions and lasting connections.

WPTCE2024 General Co-Chair

Greetings from Technical Program Committee Chairs

On behalf of the Technical Program Committee (TPC), welcome to the 2024 IEEE The Wireless Power Technologies Conference and Expo (WPTCE2024) in Kyoto, which is one of the most traditional and prestigious cities in Japan!

A total of 231 papers have been received from 28 countries, and 167 papers are included for regular-session presentations in the technical program. We have 27 technical sessions, 25 oral sessions, and two poster sessions. Additionally, it is our honor to have two exciting Plenary Talks: “Sustainable Humanosphere with Solar Power Satellite” by Prof. Hiroshi Matsumoto, Kyoto University, and “Wireless Charging Applications in Materials Handling and Transportation” by Prof. Grant Covic, Auckland University, on Thursday. It is also our pleasure to have seven keynote speeches from leading reseachers in the world and eight invited talks.

Our program can cover hot topics in various research areas gathered under the term “Wireless Power Transfer,” from near field and far field, from low power to high power, and from device to system. We would like to express our appreciation for all authors who submitted papers to WPTCE2024. In the technical sessions, there are five special sessions organized by leading researchers. The special sessions from broad research areas may raise new collaborations among symposium participants, which is quite important for succeeding WPTCE2024. We also would like to express our thanks to the special session organizers and presenters. In addition, organizing and coordinating WPTCE2024 is impossible without the contributions and services of review committee members, reviewers, and session co-chairs. We are also grateful for all their support.

Moreover, we have more exciting sessions and events every day! On Wednesday, we have WPT school sessions and Workshops. Please join and learn fundamental technologies of the WPT from the school and obtain cutting-edge theory and knowledge from the workshop. Student Design Competition, Industry sessions and exhibition, and Women in Engineering (WIE) session welcome all the attendances to join.

We really hope participants attend as many activities as possible, exchange and discuss ideas, and enjoy the technical program and WPTCE2024!
