Student Competition Application Closed!

IEEE Global Student Wireless Power Competition (SWPC)

(updated on November 21, 2023)

The IEEE Global Student Wireless Power Competition (SWPC) encourages young generations to join research and development of WPT (Wireless Power Transfer) technologies, demonstrating WPT capabilities to promote public acceptance and practical applications of WPT systems.

Important Dates:

Nov. 1, 2023 >>> Nov. 13, 2023 : Design Project Proposal submission deadline (closed)
Dec. 1, 2023: Awardees notification
Feb. 12, 2024: Design Report Submission deadline
Feb. 26, 2024: Acceptance notification
May 8-11, 2024: Onsite demonstration at WPTCE2024

Overview:

All under-graduate and/or post-graduate students from colleges, universities, or even high schools, are eligible to participate in this competition. Applications can be made either individually or in groups. Professors, supervisors, and/or mentors of the students can be assistants to them, but the proposals, reports, and demonstrations must be conducted by the students themselves.

The competition will consist of the following three stages:
1st Stage (Design Project Proposal Submission):
* Proposals should be submitted by November 1 November 13, 2023.
* All the applications will go through a “double-blind” review for winners.
* Up to 20 winners will be selected for awards. This announcement will be sent to the applicants on/around December 1, 2023.
* The winners will each receive an IEEE certificate, plus up to 1,000 USD, with the amount varying depending on the number of the winners.
2nd Stage (Design Report Submission):
* The winner teams should actually develop and realize the project proposed.
* A report of the project must be submitted by February 12, 2024.
* Up to 10 winners will be selected to go on to the 3rd Stage.
3rd Stage (Demonstration at Conference Venue):
* The winner teams of the 2nd Stage must come to the conference venue in Kyoto, Japan, and give a demonstration. (The date is yet to be determined, but most probably either May 9 or 10, 2024.)
* The demonstrations will be evaluated by the judging committee, and up to 3 winners will be selected for the best team(s), who will be announced at the Conference Banquet to be held on May 10, 2024.

1st Stage (Design Project Proposal Submission):

Those who are interested in participating in this competition should submit the following two application document files by email by November 1 November 13, 2023:
1) Cover Page (1 page) (See sample here.)
2) Project Proposal (10 pages or less) (See sample here.)

*Applications have been closed.

Project proposals must be prepared in a PDF file within 10 pages (in a single-column standard technical report format, excluding appendices) as follows:
* Introduction (1-2 pages): Motivation, contextualization and need statement,
* Objectives of the proposed system (1 paragraph – no more than half a page),
* Theoretical background (1-2 pages): Basic concepts, simulations, etc,
* Design concept (1-2 pages): Methodology how the system works,
* Budget & budget justification (1-2 pages): What you need to purchase for the project and why,
* Conclusion and future work (1 page): Highlight the novelty of the system,
* List of the references cited (1 page).

Project proposals exceeding the number of pages of 10 will lose 10% of the points per extra page.

All the submitted proposals will undergo a double-blind review, and a maximum of 20 winners will be selected. The winner teams will each receive an award money of up to 1,000 USD, with the amount varying depending on the number of the winners. They will also receive an IEEE certificate, which will be given to the winners at the Conference Banquet during the conference.

For double-blind reviews, personal information such as the name(s) of the students and school, and/or projects, should be submitted separately in the “Cover Page.” Any proposal with disclosed names of universities and/or students will be disqualified for competition.
Assessment of initial proposal:
* Novelty of the project (20%);
* Correctness of the concepts and theoretical analysis (20%);
* Results and/or final performance (20%);
* Potential of an impressive live demonstration (40%).

Notifications of the 1st Stage winners will be sent to the applicants on/around December 1, 2023, and the award money will be sent to the winners by bank transfer, hopefully by the end of December 2023.

2nd Stage (Design Report Submission):

The winner teams of the 1st stage must actually develop WPT devices, systems, applications, etc., and conduct actual experiments and measurements, based on the proposed project.  The cost to realize the project should be paid by the teams themselves. They can, of course, use the award money from the 1st stage. Any cost exceeding the amount of the award money cannot be covered by the WPTCE2024 committees.
Also, the winner teams must submit  a report of 10 pages or less to the SWPC Committee by February 12, 2024 for the final assessment.

After the reports are reviewed by the committee, up to 10 final teams will be selected to be publicly announced and included in the final program of WPTCE2024. This announcement will be made on/around February 26, 2024.

3rd Stage (Demonstration at Conference Venue):

At least one student from each of the selected teams of the 2nd Stage must come to the WPTCE2024 venue in Uji, Kyoto, Japan, during the conference period, and conduct a demonstration of the proposed project at an anechoic chamber called “A-METLAB.” The demonstrations will be evaluated by the judging committee for the best SWPC awards, and up to 3 winners will be selected.
All the winner teams, as well as the best awardee(s), will be announced at the Conference Banquet, which will be held at Heian Jingu Shrine on the evening of May 10, 2024.
